Happy Disability Pride Month, Cypress Pride Community!
July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor and celebrate the diverse experiences and contributions of individuals with disabilities in our community. At Cypress Pride, we recognize the importance of inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that every member of our community feels valued and supported.
The overlap between disability and LGBT initiatives is significant. Many individuals, including several of our own Cypress Pride leaders, navigate both identities, and it's essential to create spaces that are inclusive and affirming of all aspects of their identities. Concepts like "neuroqueer" highlight the intersection of neurodiversity and queer identities, emphasizing the need for understanding and support.
What is Neuroqueer? Neuroqueer describes the intersection of neurodiversity and queer identities, recognizing that neurodivergent individuals, such as those with autism or ADHD, may also identify as LGBTQ+.. Group member Cosette Dwyer says, “Learning about my identity as a queer person with ADHD was crucial in me being able to understand who I am at a deeper level, which in turn gave me clarity and peace. I hope others too can find this peace.” The concept of neurodiversity highlights the unique experiences and challenges faced by those who navigate both neurodivergent and queer identities.
Group member and founder Carolyn Balagot has several resources around neurodiversity to share, such as this slide deck. She and her family also run an online store with content to support both our queer and neurodivergent community.
This July, let’s celebrate the beauty of disability and neurodiversity. By embracing and uplifting all members of our community, we continue to build a more inclusive and supportive Cypress Pride.
Happy Disability Pride Month!
